SELBYXSELBY is a namesake label created by Selby Ginn, she has been exploring leather and its abilities since 2002.
Form, repetitive motifs and function are present in all of her designs, skins are created by using layered hand punched leather, wool is used for shaping forms and the filling of her quilted designs and the sewing machine literally draws her imagery creating padded symbolic motifs.
During her Honours year in Fine Art at RMIT, her professional career in fashion was rapidly expanding. Ginn became a young fashion buyer, merchandiser and operations manager, she worked with experimental labels such as trippen (GER), John Fluevog (CAN), CAMPER (SPA). Working in the footwear industry definitely shaped her appreciation of production, design and the leather industry, which is why she uses repurposed and remnant leather in most (if not all) of her designs, this is sourced from other local fashion labels.
When Ginn is in her studio she is literally collaborating with herself – ‘she is a gemini’ and needed to make sense of her two creative practice’s hence the name SELBYXSELBY.
Ginn has exhibited her work at the Venice Biennale, the Melbourne Art Fair, China and Australia and is stocked in various stores.
